Knuckles is a red echidna who protects a powerful jewel known as the Master Emerald. He is friends with Sonic the Hedgehog and he often helps Sonic find the Chaos Emeralds. He also fights with Sonic often, most often because he was fooled by Dr. Eggman. He is called Knuckles due to having large knuckles.

At times, Knuckles has a short temper, though he is very loyal, and a dependable friend and ally. He has a rivalry with Rouge the Bat, ever since she first attempted to steal the Master Emerald from under his nose. However, Knuckles mainly searches for Master Emerald pieces when it breaks (sometimes, he even breaks the Emerald to avoid having it being stolen).

First appearing in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Knuckles was a villain controlled by Dr. Eggman. Sonic finally broke Dr. Eggman's control of Knuckles, and in return, Knuckles helped Sonic in the game, Sonic and Knuckles.

Knuckles can be seen in Super Smash Bros. Brawl in the background of the Green Hill Zone stage. He can be seen running on the little loop. Knuckles also appeared as a trophy in the game. He was also a majorly wanted character once Sonic was announced for Brawl.
